Strawberry Fragaria × ananassa Rosaceae
A hybrid herbaceous species created in France in the 1750s by crossing Fragaria chiloensis from Chile and Fragaria virginiana from North America. It has hermaphrodite flowers, and the ovules are fertilised by pollen from the same flower, from other flowers of the same plant or from different plants. Widely cultivated for the production of strawberry fruits, that are highly appreciated for their aroma, bright red colour, juicy texture and sweetness.
