Sunflower Helianthus annuus Asteraceae
Cultivated for its seeds from which one of the world’s most highly consumed vegetable oils is extracted, sunflower originates from North America. Each of its characteristic inflorescences, about 30 cm in diameter, is composed of thousands of small flowers that produce seeds. Inflorescences of young sunflower plants follow the trajectory of the sun across the sky, a phenomenon known as heliotropism.
