A perennial shrub plant that is native to the Mediterranean region. It has small, oval, soft, green leaves that, due to their aroma and flavour, are widely used in Mediterranean cuisine to flavour meat, vegetables, salads, sauces, pastas and pizzas. It has antimicrobial properties which make it useful as a natural food preservative.
